Togolese midfielder Alaixys Romao is preparing to retire from international football after a successful career. At 40, he played for clubs like Marseille, Olympiakos, and Guingamp, and was a pillar of the Togolese selection with over 87 caps.
In a interview given to RFIAlaixys Romao spoke about his upcoming retirement with the Éperviers:
Yes, for sure. I never would have imagined playing until this age in the national team. I’m enjoying it now. Five years ago, friends told me: ”as long as you can continue, you have to enjoy it. As long as you have the passion, as long as you have the form, go ahead, enjoy.” There, it’s just fun, but also communicating with young people, that’s what’s good, which is enriching. What is certain is that after retirement, I will not be far from the Éperviers, it is a big story between the selection and me.
Although Togo’s elimination from CAN 2025 has sparked criticism, his image remains that of an exemplary player. Alaixys Romao will not move away from Les Eperviers after his retirement. He plans to continue passing on his experience to young talents. The big announcement is therefore awaited.
