The Globe Soccer Awards on Thursday announced the 33 nominees for the 2024 Player of the Year award at a gala to be held in Dubai on December 27.
Real Madrid, as was the case for the Ballon d’Or, is the team with the most players in the running for the prize, seven in total, including Toni Kroos, who has just retired.
Besides the German, the list of La Liga and Champions League title holders includes Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Junior, Fede Valverde, Dani Carvajal and Rodrygo. Only the latter was not among the Ballon d’Or nominees.
FC Barcelona has three nominees: Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski. More generally, the Spaniards named are Rodrigo Hernandez, Nico Williams, Lamine Yamal, Carvajal and Dani Olmo.
Two of the big surprises of the list of candidates are the presence of Leo Messi, player of Inter Miami, and Cristiano Ronaldo, of Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia. It should be remembered that Gestifute, the representation company of Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes, is behind the organization of the Globe Soccer Awards.
The best coach award, for which nine coaches are nominated, includes five Spaniards: Luis de la Fuente, Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso, Luis Enrique and Pep Guardiola. Ancelotti is obviously also named. The Italian won the equivalent prize during the last Ballon d’Or ceremony.
