Kirby Dach may not be the Canadian’s future second center, but the answer could lie internally.

With a fairly ordinary start to the campaign, where the 3rd overall pick in 2019 only collected one goal and 7 points in 16 games, many are wondering if his place is really behind Nick Suzuki.

Now, if not Dach, who would be able to take on this role in his place?

It won’t happen tomorrow, but Michael Hage believes he has the potential to achieve this.

During a generous interview with Marco D’Amico (Responsible Gambler), the 21st overall pick in 2024 admitted that he has an idea of his future within the CH roster. However, he is aware that this role will not be offered to him on a silver platter.

I believe I will be the type of offensive center who can play in a top-6 position in the NHL. But I know that I won’t get there just through my skills and that it’s going to be a process. I’m going to have to earn it and work for it every day to get there. Nothing is ever given to you in the NHL.

Michael Hage

Hage and D’Amico also compared his playing style to that of Jack Eichelciting his creativity with the puck, good speed and excellent puck handling in transition.

However, when should we expect to see the young forward wear the Montreal uniform? For his part, he is certainly in no hurry to take the plunge: he first wants to ensure that his level of play is high enough for the NHL. Like every NCAA player, he also wants to win the championship.

At the end of the year, I will speak with my agent and take into account what Montreal wants to do and then we will go from there. But for now, I’m 100% focused on helping my team win a championship.

Michael Hage

Hage, who is able to speak French and has family in Montreal, says he is aware of the fans’ passion because he was one himself in his youth. In this sense, he knows that wearing this uniform comes with enormous cultural and historical baggage.

In 9 games, the 6’1, 190 lbs center amassed 5 goals and 9 points with the University of Michigan. In his first season in the university ranks, he is already one of the most important pieces of his club.

In any case, let’s remember that with the setbacks of the Habs this season, another first overall pick is not impossible. If James Hagens is selected by Montreal, we will no longer have to ask this type of question for years to come.
