On May 29, 1985, the Champions Clubs’ Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus was the scene of one of the greatest dramas linked to a sporting event. This Wednesday, the Italian delegation paid tribute to the victims.
The May 29, 1985, the Heysel Stadium in Brussels was the scene of a terrible tragedy. 39 people lost their lives and more than 600 people were injured during clashes between Liverpool and Juventus supporters, minutes before the Champions Clubs’ Cup final played between the two clubs.
Almost an hour before the start of the match, Reds supporters invaded the stand reserved for Italian fans, creating unimaginable chaos. The Old Lady finally won the match, thanks to a goal from Michel Platini, from the penalty spot, who celebrated as if nothing had happened.
This event will already celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, but no one has forgotten. The disaster was such that even today, tributes to the victims of this tragedy are not rare.
In front of the King Baudouin Stadium, a commemorative monument has been created. It is a place very dear to people who directly experienced the event, or to Italians/English going to the scene.
Before Belgium – Italy this Thursday evening in the League of Nations, the passage was therefore obligatory for the Squadra delegation. In these photos, we can see the coach Luciano Spelletti, the legend Gianluigi Buffon, but also the Italian ambassador Favi Federica paying tribute to the victims of the tragedy. Beautiful images.
