Football: Ranieri comes out of retirement for Roma

Claudio Ranieri, who retired last June, will become coach of AS Roma, 12th in the Italian Championship, at the age of 73, the Italian press reported on Wednesday.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport and the Sky Sport television channel, Ranieri and the American owners of Roma reached an agreement this Wednesday in London.

His appointment will be made official on Thursday after signing his contract and he will lead his first training session on Thursday afternoon.

Ranieri, born in Rome and trained at Roma, has already coached the Giallorossi twice, between 2009 and 2011, narrowly failing to win the league title in 2010, and for a few months in 2019.

AS Roma did not wish to confirm this information.

Ranieri, crowned English champion in 2016 with Leicester, one of the most resounding achievements in the history of the Premier League, will succeed Ivan Juric, who was relieved of his duties last weekend after a fourth defeat in five league matches.

The Croatian technician was appointed in September to replace Daniele De Rossi, sacked after four matches.

Ranieri will be Roma’s fourth manager since the start of the year, with Jose Mourinho having been fired last January.

The Louve club only pocketed 13 points in twelve matches. It is thirteen points behind leader Naples and twelve in 5th place, undoubtedly qualifying for the C1, occupied by its great rival, Lazio.

Ranieri, who notably worked at Inter, Juventus, Chelsea, Monaco and , left his position as coach of Cagliari in June, announcing that his coaching career was over, unless he was offered a position as coach, a position he held very briefly in 2014 with Greece.
