Eddy Pineiro made a 36-yard field goal in overtime to help the Carolina Panthers defeat the New York Giants 20-17 on Sunday in Germany.
The Giants (2-8) won the toss to start overtime with possession, but rookie running back Tyrone Tracy committed a fumble on the first play. Josey Jewell recovered the ball at the 23 line.
“I just didn’t hold the ball well,” Tracy said. I was trying to sneak through and I walked into a hole. I have to hold the ball higher, it’s my fault and I’ll have to live with it. My standards are high so when it happens, all my emotions come out at that moment. »
Defensive back A’Shawn Robinson, who played for the Giants last season, caused the turnaround. A great soccer fan, he was nourished by the energy of playing in one of the most famous stadiums in Europe.
“It was everything I wanted. It was an emotional surge that I had been hovering over since we got on the plane,” Robinson said.
The Giants erased a 17-7 deficit in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime when Graham Gano made a 42-yard field goal with five seconds left.
Gano, who missed a 43-yard field goal earlier in the game, was playing for the first time since September after rehabbing a hamstring injury.
Chuba Hubbard, who signed a four-year, US$33.2 million extension earlier this week, carried the ball 28 times for 153 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers (3-7 ).
Bryce Young completed 15 of 25 passes for 126 yards, and he threw a touchdown pass to Ja’Tavion Sanders in the first quarter.
Young, the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, has won two games in a row for the first time in his NFL career. The Panthers have won two in a row for the first time since the 2022 season.
Quarterback Daniel Jones saw 22 of his 37 attempts through the air being caught for gains of 190 yards. However, he was the victim of two interceptions. Tracy had 18 carries for 103 yards and a major for the Giants, who suffered a fifth straight loss.
Jones orchestrated the Giants’ comeback in the fourth quarter, as he capped a 13-play, 96-yard drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown. The offensive series lasted almost seven minutes.
Jones then led a 12-play drive that allowed Gano to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.
The Panthers took a 10-0 lead early in the first half, following a 53-yard field goal from Pineiro and a touchdown pass from Young.
A 32-yard run by Tracy in the third quarter put the Giants on the scoreboard, but Hubbard responded with a 1-yard run to give the Panthers a 17-7 lead in the fourth quarter.
