Euro 2024: Polish television victim of cyberattack during broadcast of match against Netherlands

The website of Polish public television sports channel TVP Spot was hacked while it was broadcasting Poland’s match against the Netherlands this Sunday during Euro 2024.

While their national team was facing the Netherlands in Euro 2024 this Sunday, some Polish supporters missed the first period of the match. The cause? The website of Polish public television sports channel TVP Sport was the victim of a cyberattack. The site was completely blocked until the start of the second half, much to the dismay of Polish fans.

“Around 3 p.m., Polish television noticed a DDOS attack carried out from IP addresses located in Poland. In less than a minute, we began to act in cooperation with domestic operators, which helped mitigate the attack. IT services have restored services,” TVP Sport director Jakub Kwiatkowski said on his X account (ex-Twitter). A DDOS attack makes a server inaccessible in order to cause a breakdown or severely degraded operation of the service.

Disturbances in the Netherlands

The Dutch streaming platform, called NLZiet, broadcast the match in the Netherlands. According to the Batavian press, the site also suffered disruptions during the broadcast of the match. This time it was not the fault of a cyberattack but of high traffic, which caused bugs on the website. Dutch fans were unable to follow the first half of the match.

Fortunately for them, the Netherlands won 2-1 against Poland thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo (29th) and Wout Weghorst (83rd). The two nations are in Group D of the France team with Austria. The Blues will enter the fray this Monday against the Austrians (9 p.m.).
