A former coach was sentenced Friday to three years in prison for sexual assault and harassment of a 13-year-old player.

A 57-year-old former football coach was sentenced Friday by the Brussels criminal court to three years in prison with suspended probation for sexual assault and harassment of a player aged 13 at the time of the facts.

The investigation began in 2019 when the victim’s parents discovered messages that had been sent to him via Facebook. The police seized the young boy’s tablet and established that the publications came from a football coach. The latter had notably sent naked photos of himself.

Investigations also uncovered more than 350 photos and 150 videos of particularly harsh sexual abuse of minors on the defendant’s computer.

The fifty-year-old admitted his faults and claimed to have undergone therapy. His counsel had pleaded for a suspended sentence. A request heard by the court, which handed down a three-year suspended sentence for what exceeds the four months of preventive detention. The man must be accompanied and is prohibited from coming into contact with the victim.
