Catamarans passing each other at high speed. Fleet races with around ten teams using floats to position themselves in the right place. Nervous rounds lasting around fifteen minutes at most, with television broadcast required. An audience gathered at the edge of an iconic body of water. This is the program for the Sail GP, the most challenging sailing circuit.

The best boats with the best sailors, this inevitably gives a spectacle which has seduced the public for four seasons. In 2025, this real Sailing Circus will set up its marquee in Geneva. A major event which took shape as soon as Switzerland joined the Sail GP in 2022. The question, since then, was no longer if, but when, Lake Geneva would see the F1 of the seas arrive. It will therefore be September 21 and 22, 2025.

Lots of work behind the scenes

A lot of work has been undertaken behind the scenes to put together this 2025 Swiss Grand Prix. Russell Coutts, the CEO of the organization, has always been very positive when asked if Geneva had the capacity to receive a barnum of this magnitude. The former Alinghi skipper, winner of the America’s Cup in 2003 with Ernesto Bertarelli’s team, has always had a special link with Switzerland and Geneva.

The presence of Rolex as a major sponsor of the Sail GP circuit also worked in favor of Geneva, which is home to the world headquarters of the crown watchmaker. Furthermore, Alex Schneiter, boss of Team Tilt, and founder of Switzerland Sail GP has never hidden the fact that holding a Grand Prix on his land was a long-term objective.

From then on, the winds were favorable and the meetings with the cantonal and municipal authorities were as numerous as they were constructive. Confirmation of what was being whispered behind the scenes was given this Tuesday morning, during an event held at the Parc des Eaux-Vives restaurant in the presence of Russell Coutts, members of the Swiss Sail GP team as well as authorities.

“We are delighted to announce that Lake Geneva (Lake of Geneva in English) will host the first ever Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix next year, Russell Coutts has announced. And we know that the Swiss will support the Swiss Sail GP team’s home debut.”
