Morocco sows discord between Algeria and Tunisia

Algeria – Tunisian sports analyst Abdelbaki Benmessaoud recently warned of potential tensions between Tunisia and Algeria ahead of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) elections. According to him, certain actors, including Morocco, would seek to create divisions and sow discord between the two nations around the question of representation within the organization. For Benmessaoud, Tunisia would have every interest in supporting the Algerian candidacy, represented by Walid Sadi, president of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), rather than presenting its own candidate.

Benmessaoud believes that Tunisian support for Sadi would make it possible to strengthen cooperation between the two countries within the CAF, an organization where Maghreb unity could constitute an asset in the face of existing rivalries. He considers that Walid Sadi, if elected, could play a central role in defending the interests of Algeria but also of Tunisia, because of the common values and objectives between the two nations. In addition, Tunisia’s cooperation in this election would make it possible to consolidate North African influence in African football, a favorable dynamic for the entire region.

Abdelbaki Benmessaoud recalls that attempts at division have already taken place in the past, and that this competition within CAF could weaken both countries. By supporting a common candidate, Tunisia and Algeria can on the contrary strengthen their influence, especially since the CAF elections promise to be a crucial step for the future of African football. For his part, Walid Sadi is seen as a competent leader, capable of representing not only his country but also of relaying the needs of his neighbors.

The strategy that Benmessaoud recommends is likely to avoid unnecessary confrontations and to preserve Maghreb solidarity in African sporting bodies. By emphasizing the importance of this cooperation, he encourages Tunisian leaders to adopt a favorable position towards Algeria, recalling that the interests of the two countries are often aligned within the framework of CAF competitions and development projects.

Thus, for the Tunisian analyst, supporting Walid Sadi would be a winning decision for both nations, making it possible to promote the brotherhood between Tunisia and Algeria, while strengthening their weight within African football.
