Completely improbable, and yet a French bettor had bet on the podium of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly before the start of the weekend in Brazil.
While Alpine arrived in São Paulo in ninth position in the constructors' championship, it was difficult to imagine a podium for one of the two Frenchmen and even less to see them together in the top 3.
At the end of the race at a press conference, the two Normans discussed this subject of a potential crazy bet, with the two single-seaters from the French team on the podium.
“I don’t think anyone in the world today would have thought that at some point this year two Alpines would be on the podium”indicated Pierre Gasly.
“I want to know the guy who bet on it”replied Esteban Ocon to his teammate. Pierre Gasly then added: “If there is one, it’s an absolute legend!”

16,000 euros won for a 10 cent bet
So there was indeed “an absolute legend” that RMC Sport interviewed after the race. Christopher, 33, is the famous bettor who bet 10 cents on the Alpine podium, odds of 160,000 (two odds of 400 multiplied by two), which allowed him to pocket 16,000 euros.
“On Thursday, when I got the news that it was going to rain, I sent lots of little combinations to the top 2, top 3, top 6. €50 in total to spice up my race a little”, he explained to the French media.
“When the red flag comes out, I start to say to myself that it's possible for the two Frenchmen, but there were still more than 30 laps remaining, so it's very long. At the end I didn't even watch the race anymore, I only looked at the gaps between Russell and Gasly, which hovered around a second.”
When the Alpine finally finished second and third, there was no explosion of joy for the French punter, who did not “not shouted or jumped” but still said to himself “hyper content”. “I will have to frame this podium with my bet”concluded the lucky winner.
