.The IOC’s participation in the World Urban Forum is part of the “Sport for sustainable urban development” initiative, which embodies the commitment of the IOC and UN-Habitat to making sport a catalyst for sustainable urban growth. Five cities have already joined the initiative, which aims to provide around 25,000 people with access to new opportunities to safely practice accessible, inclusive sport focused on social development.
The Sport for Sustainable Urban Development initiative is part of the IOC’s Olympism365 strategy, which uses sport to promote sustainable development by connecting with the wider networks of city leaders and officials of UN-Habitat.
In July 2024, the IOC and UN-Habitat signed a five-year memorandum of understanding. This collaboration focuses on using sport to drive progress in three key areas:
Health: promotion of active lifestyles and physical well-being in urban communities.
Social integration: building fairer and more inclusive societies through the unifying power of sport.
Urban regeneration: revitalizing urban spaces to make them greener, safer and more sustainable
