Heavy rains hit Barcelona on Monday, causing massive flooding and disrupting the operation of the Catalan capital’s airport. Flights were diverted to Toulouse.
This Monday morning, Barcelona and its surroundings were swept by torrential rains. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) recorded up to 180 liters of water per m² in 24 hours, triggering a red alert. Six regions in the province of Barcelona, including Vallès Occidental and Barcelonès, were the most affected.
19 diverted flights, 2 to the Pink City
Due to these bad weather, rail traffic was severely disrupted, as was the operation of Barcelona-El Prat airport. The hub was not spared, with 50 flights canceled and 19 diverted to other cities such as Alicante, Girona or Toulouse. At 11:20 a.m., AEMET had recorded nearly 150 mm of rain at the airport.

Two flights to Barcelona were diverted to Toulouse due to the storm cell: a flight at 9:13 a.m. from Shenzhen (China) and a flight at 9:46 a.m. from Paris CDG. “The planes stayed about two hours in Toulouse before leaving” and “the passengers remained on board” specifies Toulouse Blagnac Airport (ATB).
