The qualifying session for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix was marked by several accidents, including those of Williams F1 drivers, in rain which made the Interlagos track very tricky. Alex Albon suffered a crash at the end of the pit straight in which he destroyed the rear of his FW46.
Seventh fastest in Q3, which would have earned him a start on the fourth row, he was even second at the time of his accident. Questioned by Viaplay, he admitted that the damage is too heavy to compete in the race: “It’s over, there’s no chance. No chance.”
Interviewed by F1 TV, he said more about a mechanical problem that took him out, but is not more optimistic for the race: “I know we had a problem…Immediately when I stepped on the brake pedal, I heard a beep in my ear.”
“That normally means there’s a fault. There was a lock at the rear, and then a big crash. That means we’re out of the race unfortunately. No, it won’t be fixed.”
Franco Colapinto crashed into turn 3 but his Williams seemed less damaged. He was nonetheless devastated by the incident and admitted that he did not see the loss of control that ended his session coming.
“I’m fine. I skidded, lost the rear very aggressively and couldn’t get the car back. It was my first time in the rain, I made a mistake. I’m sorry for the guys, they’ll have work to do for me to race, I’m sorry.” declared the Argentinian, very frustrated by his accident.
