Youri Tielemans currently appears to be one of the executives of the Red Devils. He acted as such by taking responsibility.
Domenico Tedesco is under intense pressure ahead of the final two Nations League matches. The first two places in the group will be very difficult to obtain after the 1/6 of last month in Italy and against France
Off the field too, tensions with Courtois and De Bruyne complicated the coach’s task. Romelu Lukaku also shared his recent disenchantment with the selection, declaring that he had to “find the passion again” before returning.
In this situation, Youri Tielemans has become one of the bosses of the national team, at least in terms of selections. He defended Tedesco in an interview with Nieuwsblad: for him, the coach is not the problem. “Of course not,” proclaims the Aston Villa midfielder.
“He has nothing to do with that. Everyone saw that against France, we played great football. We didn’t concede many chances and created a lot of them.” Tielemans even takes responsibility: “If I scored this penalty, it would have been a completely different match.”
The Red Devils, however, are struggling to regain the level reached in the past, with less depth at each position. “We have young players who can still reach this level. It’s a little more complicated now. But that doesn’t mean that in a few years we won’t be able to find the level of 2018 or even surpass it,” concludes Tielemans with optimism.
