Even though he is only playing his first full season in MLS, star player Lionel Messi has already written his name in the circuit’s history book.
With a goal and an assist Saturday night in a 3-3 draw against St. Louis, Messi became the player to contribute to his team’s 25 goals in a season the fastest in franchise history. MLS.
Messi took just 12 games to score 25 goals, shattering the previous mark of 16 games held by Carlos Vela.
Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba also found the back of the net for Miami, while Chris Durkin and Indiana Vassilev scored for St. Louis. Miami’s opponents also benefited from a Suarez own goal.
The two teams traded goals in the first half to have an even score midway through the game. With Miami trailing 1-0, Messi made a great individual sequence to put the ball back to Alba. The latter immediately returned the ball to Messi, who created the tie 1-1 with a good strike.
After seeing St. Louis take control, Miami was able to count on Suarez’s offensive contribution to bring everyone back to square one in stoppage time in the first half. Suarez completed a brilliant multi-player passing play to tie the game with his 12th goal of the season.
Suarez quickly went from hero to zero. In the 68th minute, he accidentally redirected an Eduard Löwen corner kick into the back of his net to put St. Louis in control.
In the 85th minute, Alba managed to escape and tied the game 3-3 to allow Miami to draw and earn a point in the standings.
After the international break, Miami will return to action on Saturday, June 15 against the Philadelphia Union.
