Chaos was narrowly avoided: many Beerschot supporters were arrested before the match against Anderlecht – All football

This Friday evening, 25 Beerschot supporters were arrested before the match against Anderlecht. The police received messages stating that disturbances could occur during the meeting.

Beerschot hosted Sporting Anderlecht as part of the 11th day of the Pro League, this Friday evening. Before the meeting, the Antwerp police had been warned that unrest could occur.

The security system has therefore been strengthened. And in the minutes before the game, 25 Beerschot supporters were arrested. “The police set up a checkpoint at one of the entrances to the stadium. There were also patrols in the surrounding streets” commented the spokesperson for the local police, Wouter Bruyns, in the columns of the Gazette of Antwerp.

“In both cases, the intention was to control and exclude from the stadium supporters who posed a risk to public order and security. The police received signals that this match could cause problems,” continues Wouter Bruyns, in reference to the delicate situation of the Rats before the meeting pushing the supporters to plan actions to try to change things.

“Around 25 supporters were arrested. These are people who violated a stadium or perimeter ban, who had drugs in their pockets or who we already know for having disturbed public order during football matches” concluded the spokesperson.

A meeting which was finally able to be fought to the end and which saw the promoted side win their first victory of the season against Anderlecht. And perhaps without the local police, the meeting would have been stopped before Beerschot took charge…
