The awarding of a championship bonus point for the driver who achieves the fastest lap in a race during Formula 1 Grands Prix will disappear from 2025.

The International Federation (FIA) announced this at the end of the World Motor Sport Council on Thursday, without however giving an explanation as to the removal of the measure.

The rule, introduced in 2019, awards an additional point to the author of the fastest lap in a race if he or she finishes in the top ten and is not subject to a penalty. Its goal is to prolong the suspense until the end of the GPs.

But the device can also prove to be a strategic element for the teams, as was the case during the Singapore GP in September. At Marina Bay, Daniel Ricciardo (Racing Bulls) thus deprived Lando Norris (McLaren) of this bonus point, in the fight for the title behind Max Verstappen (Red Bull), creating an imbroglio since Racing Bulls is none other than the sister team of Red Bull.
