Days after an eight-goal offensive outburst, the Ottawa Senators were brought back to earth by Jacob Markstrom and the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night in a 3-1 loss.

Markstrom made 30 saves on the 31 shots he faced in the Devils’ victory (5-2-0).

Brady Tkachuk was the only score for his team by deflecting a shot from Claude Giroux with a little over a minute remaining in the game while goaltender Anton Forsberg found himself on the Senators’ bench (2-2-0 ).

In the absence of injured Linus Ullmark, Forsberg made 32 saves in front of the Senators net. Furthermore, Ullmark was back on the ice with his teammates during his team’s morning practice, which indicates an imminent return to play.

The Devils opened the scoring early in the 2nd period with the first goals of the season from Erik Haula and Nathan Bastian. Accomplice on his team’s first goal, defender Johnathan Kovacevic collected his 4th assist of the season.

Paul Cotter added to his team’s lead with his 5th goal of the campaign, a record for the Devils. During the sequence, defenseman Dougie Hamilton collected his first point of the season.

Ottawa scored eight goals Monday night in an 8-7 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Kings.
