The French team continues to lose its big names. A legend made strong confidences.

From Hugo Lloris to Antoine Griezmann, via Olivier Giroud and Raphaël Varane, the team has lost many senior players over the last two years. Vice-captain behind Hugo Lloris, Varane had chosen to retire after the 2022 World Cup, like his goalkeeper friend.

But after drawing a line under the Blues, the 2018 world champion completely hung up his boots three weeks ago. A carefully considered decision, which resulted from repeated physical problems, as he explained in an interview with L’Équipe.

Varane reveals the date of his decision

« When I got injured on July 11, I knew right away that it was over, said Raphaël Varane. I was sure of myself, because I had anticipated everything. It’s a sprain of the left knee, from a really innocuous action. Seeing the images, you wonder how I got hurt, there is no contact, no twisting. I had it for several weeks, it wasn’t that serious, but that it was the left knee was a strong sign, for me, because the left knee has been compensating for the right knee since 2013. It’s through it that I I found a balance in the imbalance. So, if my left knee tells me it’s fed up, I have to listen to it. »

« I think that on the ground, I already know that. The next day, I talked about it directly, saying that we would talk about it again cold, and about ten days later, time to digest, I announced it. It was difficult, but I have often made difficult decisions in my career, and this was the ultimate decision. But it was the right one“, concluded the former central defender.
