At 92, he plays

Marcel Moisan thanks the doctor who, with a simple suggestion, changed his life. The 92-year-old from Baie-Comois has become a lover of and it is certainly not his age that prevents him from leaving his house, several times a week, for his 9 holes.

Walking, socializing, activity and the great outdoors; this is what motivates Marcel Moisan to get up in the morning, grab his golf bag and go hit a few balls at the Baie-Comeau Golf Club.

And it started completely by chance. “I had an operation for prostate cancer. It’s been maybe 25 years. The surgeon suggested that I take my mind off things. Golf was the suggestion,” says the man born in Saint-Raymond-de-Portneuf and Baie-Comois by adoption since 1967.

“That’s where I started,” he continues. I’m an early riser, so I left at 5:30 or 6:30 in the morning, with a bag, a stick, then 25 balls. I would hit 150 or 175 balls and come back at 7 in the morning for lunch. After that, I was going to take my walk. »

Mr. Moisan has always been a great walker. “At least three quarters of an hour to an hour every day,” he says.

“I have always been active. My first passion was fishing. I had a camp in the forest, then I was fond of fishing,” says the man.

No cart

“It makes me a little special because I was told I was the oldest member here. It’s special, but I’m still managing,” says Marcel Moisan, who was waiting for the end of his interview with The Manic to tee off on the golf course.

But, even at 92 years old, there is no question of taking a golf cart. Mr. Moisan walks the 9-hole course.

“I like it, because it’s a good walk. We also make friends. It’s easily a good walk of two and a half, three hours,” says the man who started with practices once or twice a year to integrate golf as a regular and essential activity into his routine.

“If God gives me life, I will still register there, next spring,” he exclaims.

Advice

Marcel Moisan goes to the Baie-Comeau Golf Club whenever he wants and also plays in the Friendship League.

In this league, people aged 50 and over join together for a course whether they are experienced or not. Moreover, the most experienced are often paired with beginners.

Even if Mr. Moisan does not dare say that he is in the category of “experts”, he sometimes gives advice to his colleagues. “It is certain that if the gentleman, his feet are placed in a certain way, he will strike in such a way. Sometimes you’re going to tell him the next time, watch your feet,” he reveals.

Win the jackpot

A dream crosses the mind of Baie-Comois. If he won the lottery, he would want to make golf accessible to everyone.

“I dream of winning the jackpot and this is what I would do. It seems to me that at each comprehensive school, each school, I would organize a kind of green for them. It would attract young people, during the break for example. It seems to me that it would really interest them,” declares the dean of the Baie-Comeau Golf Club.
