Tennis: XXL prize money much higher than that of a Grand Slam, dream casting… What is the “Six Kings Slam”, this Saudi exhibition tournament?

the essential
This Wednesday, October 16, the elite of world will meet in Saudi Arabia for a three-day exhibition tournament which has the particularity of being very profitable…

A few weeks ago, on the sidelines of the Laver Cup, world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz made an outing that caused quite a stir. The Spaniard denouncing the infernal pace to which players on the world circuit are subjected: “There are a lot of compulsory tournaments, they will kill us”. A somewhat strange timing since the player had just participated in an exhibition tournament.

Dream casting

And clearly, the winner of Roland-Garros is resourceful despite an admittedly overloaded schedule. From this Wednesday, October 16, and until this Saturday, the Iberian will be taking part in another exhibition competition: the “Six Kings Slam”, alongside Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Holger Rune, Daniil Medvedev but also world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. In short, nothing short of heavy in this competition organized in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.

5.5 million euros for the winner

If the sporting interest of such a competition can be debated, there is however no debate on the financial aspect. Each participant is guaranteed to pocket a whopping 1.5 million euros. And the check promised to the winner is enough to make one salivate: 6 million dollars (5.5 million euros). That’s about double what a Grand Slam winner can pocket.

In this context, we understand better that players can make some efforts to add a few matches, outside the ATP circuit.

A short format

This Wednesday, Carlos Alcaraz will meet Holger Rune for the quarter-final, with a semi-final at stake against Rafael Nadal, already qualified in the last four as ambassador of the Saudi Tennis Federation. The other quarter-final will pit Jannik Sinner against Daniil Medvedev, to validate a ticket granting the right to face Novak Djokovic. The semi-finals are scheduled for this Thursday, October 17, the final on Saturday.
