Senegalese karateka Serigne Mbacké Seck won the bronze medal in the over 76 kg category at the cadet, junior and hopeful world karate championships in Venice, Italy. The competition, which took place from October 9 to 15, saw Seck win 4-2 against a Luxembourg opponent to clinch third place.

At the start of the tournament, Seck defeated opponents from Poland (8-0) and Scotland (6-2) in the first and second rounds. In the third round, he triumphed by referee decision against a Bulgarian. However, he suffered a fourth round defeat to an Italian.

In the repechage events, Serigne Mbacké Seck, who is ranked sixth in the world in his category, dominated his Kazakh opponent by 8-0. Note that he obtained a silver medal at the African Karate Championships in Casablanca in August 2024.

Other Senegalese competitors also participated. Fama Samassa De Han (-54 kg) was eliminated in the first round, while Maimouna Niang (-55 kg) finished in seventh place.

Fodé Ndao, head of the national selections of the Senegalese Karate Federation, hailed Seck’s performance as a victory for Senegalese karate, emphasizing the importance of training work. He also expressed the hope of seeing the discipline represented at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games and called for state support for the development of karate in Senegal.
