Wouter Vrancken is leaving his post as coach of Genk with immediate effect, the Limburg club announced in a press release on Thursday, confirming information published Wednesday by the Dutch-speaking press. His deputies Domenico Olivieri, Michel Ribeiro and Eddy Vanhemel will act as interim until the end of the season.

“KRC officially announces that coach Wouter Vrancken has decided not to honor his long-term contract with the club,” Racing wrote in its press release. “Before the double confrontation against Club Brugge, Wouter Vrancken’s entourage made it known that he prioritized a new challenge. Vrancken officially confirmed this point of view this week after two weeks of discussions. Given the crucial phase in which the Champions Playoffs are located and the fight for a European ticket in which Genk is involved. The club was of the opinion to end the collaboration with immediate effect.

Vrancken is announced for La Gantoise where he should take over from Hein Vanhaezebrouck. He arrived in Genk in July 2022 from Mechelen. Last season, he led the Limburgers to the brink of the title, finally failing in 2nd place after a goal from Toby Alderweireld in added time which offered the title to Antwerp. He signed a four-year contract in the fall of 2022, a few months after his arrival at Racing.
