Montreal Canadiens prospect Oliver Kapanen signed a two-year deal Thursday with Timra in the Swedish League (SHL).

Kapanen’s father, Kimmo, is also the general director of this training.

The 20-year-old center spent the last two seasons with KalPa Kuopio in his home country of Finland.

Chosen in the second round by the Habs in the 2021 draft, Kapanen experienced some growth last season, which recently led KalPa coach Petri Karjalainen to declare that “in the last stage of the season and during the playoffs, he was the best player in the league.

Known for his efficiency at both ends of the ice, Kapanen has accumulated a record of 14 goals and 20 assists in 51 games in the Liiga in 2023-2024.

Kapanen, Sami’s nephew, who played 831 games in the NHL, will represent Finland at the World Hockey Championship which begins this week in Czechia.

He could sign his entry-level contract with the Canadiens in the near future and will likely be in the team’s next training camp.
