The Montreal Canadiens could have avoided significant controversy in the 2021 draft if they had claimed the player behind Logan Mailloux on their roster.

According to information reported by journalist Marc-Antoine Godin in an episode of the Radio-Canada podcast Tellement hockey, Knies was a player who interested Trevor Timmins and his recruiting staff.

“He’s a guy that the CH had on their radar when they chose Mailloux,” revealed Godin. According to our information, if it wasn’t Logan, it was Knies next.”

Mailloux was chosen 31st overall by the Habs that year, so Knies had to be patient, he who was finally claimed towards the end of the second round, 57th overall, by the Toronto Maple Leafs .

Knies made the jump to the pros last year after having an excellent season in the NCAA at the end of which he was named a finalist for the Hobey-Baker Trophy awarded to the MVP of the collegiate circuit.

The 6-foot-3, 217-pound big forward has 35 points, including 15 goals, in 80 games with the Maple Leafs this season, adding three points, including two goals, in seven games during the playoffs.

Mailloux, however, is not to be outdone, having taken part in the American League All-Star Game and obtaining his first point in the National Hockey League during the Canadiens’ last game of the season. Convicted in Sweden the year of his draft for sharing a sexual photograph of a woman without her consent, Mailloux has since rehabilitated himself, so much so that the NHL gave him the green light to play among its ranks.
