The Caen Basket Calvados is in the quarter-finals of the playoffs ! The Cébécistes dominated Le Havre, this Sunday, May 5, 2024, in the support match of the round of 16 (76-64). They led almost all of the debates in a Sports Palace still on fire. Their defensive aggressiveness and the depth of their squad made the difference. The Le Havre bench scored… a point. The CBC, following on from the return match played two days earlier (92-83) did not really tremble, despite a serious close to Le Havre in the last minutes.

Caen will face Tourswinner of Pont-de-Chéruy, in the next round.

Right from the start in the right rhythm

The 7-0 inflicted from the start, after an award-winning shot by Yann Siegwarth as a launching pad, set the tone. If Le Havre quickly returned in this start to the match played at a frantic pace (13-14, 6′), the Calvadosiens was quick to show who were the bosses. Perfect Njiba and Yanik Blanc struck in the same corner (23-16, 10′). There ball moved fast and well in the Caen game, the STB had difficulty keeping up.

The nature of the debates was confirmed at the attack of the second quarter, when Yanik Blanc hits three-pointers again against. After only twelve minutes of play, nine Caen players had already scored (31-22, 13′). There will be some four at half-time for Le Havreat the much lower bench depth.

THE Caen substitutes took their team elsewhere in this second quarter, like the excellent White, of course, but also Earvine Bassoumba (33-24, 17′). At halftime, however, Pierre Hannequin and Valentin Bigote kept Le Havre alive (37-30, 20′).

A decisive third quarter

It’s in the third quarter, still on the basis of a huge defensive pressure, that the Cébécists were really going to take off. Le Havre was completely asphyxiated. Yann Siegwarth, Mounir Bernaoui and Yanik Blanc hit behind 6.75 meters, Bali Coulibaly stripped down, Caen took a 19-point lead (56-37, 29′).

The Seinomarins have tried to react, but their opponents remained calm. Caen managed its advantage intelligently, stretching possessions. Bali Coulibaly took the opportunity to offer himself a dunk (62-47, 34′).

Le Havre held on

The lack of skill of the Whites, however, allowed Le Havre to keep hope (62-54, 36′). Fabrice Courcier’s men threw all their strength into the battle and concern appeared after Kayembe’s “and one” (67-62, 39′).

The fault of Pierre Hannequin, 24 points, on a desperate three-point shot from Yann Siegwarth is then appeared as a blessing (70-62, 39′). Caen ultimately did not crack, unlike Ruphin Kayembe, disqualified after a big foul on Malela Mutuale 55 seconds from the buzzer. Yann Siegwarth (18 points) remained unfazed.
