It is Germany which wins the precious additional sesame.
It was one of the last suspenses of the season: with the reform of the Champions League next season, two additional places are allocated to the two countries which have the best run in the European Cup over the previous year. Italy won the first ticket in the quarter-finals. France, England and especially Germany had a chance of obtaining the second.
In pole position, and with three clubs still qualified (Bayern, Dortmund and Leverkusen) Germany only needed two wins, or one win and two draws to no longer be joined in the UEFA index. After the two semi-finals first leg of the Champions League (Bayern’s draw and Dortmund’s victory), the Bundesliga clubs are on very good track to fulfill the contract, since it would be enough for a draw in the four remaining matches (half -Return finals of Bayern and Dortmund and double confrontation of Leverkusen against AS Roma).
A nice gift to yourself from Dortmund
France could still catch up with Germany, but it still had to win all its matches, especially against German clubs. PSG’s defeat in Dortmund therefore definitively buried the hopes of a fifth French club in the Champions League, and at the same time offered a European place to the 5th in the Bundesliga.
With now 18,357 points, Germany cannot be taken over by England (maximum 18,250 pts) and France (max 18,083 pts), as calculated by Bild. Good news for the 5th in the Bundesliga which is none other than… Dortmund. And with 12 points ahead of 6th (Frankfurt) with 3 days remaining, the men from the Ruhr have offered themselves a place in the biggest European competition next season.
