Barca consider signing retired player to replace ter Stegen

Barça are looking for a solution after Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s serious injury. The goalkeeper, who underwent surgery for a ruptured patellar tendon, is unlikely to play again this season and several options are being explored to replace him.

This is obviously a big blow for Barça: Marc-André ter Stegen is unlikely to play this season. The German goalkeeper, who suffered a ruptured patellar tendon this weekend, is facing a serious injury and a long absence. Obviously, in Catalonia, they are looking for a solution, while the summer transfer window is now over. The Spanish press reports that plan A remains the current replacement goalkeeper, Inaki Pena, who should settle in between the posts in the short term.

But Barça wants a replacement, or even a goalkeeper of another calibre to fill this position. The priority? Wojciech Szczesny. The Pole left Juventus this summer, ending his contract which ran until 2025, before announcing… his retirement. The Pole would however be ready to change his mind to sign for Barça, which will however have to negotiate with Juventus, which has retained the application of a clause entitling it to compensation if Szczesny signs elsewhere by 2025. The amount in question could even be paid directly by the player.

Other goalkeepers are also being cited as potential targets. Keylor Navas, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper, has been free since July 1 and could emerge as a credible contender, according to various Spanish newspapers. The battle is on and the race against time promises to be intense.
