Fighter jets are military aircraft whose role is to ensure control of the airspace. They are designed to offer exceptional maneuverability and withstand all weather conditions. Expressed in Mach, the speed of fighter jets is a key element of their performance in the air. Mach 1 corresponds to 1,224 km/h, the speed necessary to reach the sound barrier. It was first broken in the early 1950s. Today, fighter jets can easily reach the sound barrier twice, or Mach 2 or 2,469.6 km/h.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-31 is the undisputed master of fighter aircraft. It is equipped with two Soloviev D-30 turbojets that offer a top speed of 3,300 km/h (Mach 2.83) at an altitude of 3,000 meters. The MiG-31 is closely followed by the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle aircraft and its maximum speed of 3,000 km/h (Mach 2.5). A pioneer of fighter aircraft with stealth technologies, the F15 Eagle is a single-seater for combat and ground attack. The podium is completed by the Sukhoi Su-27 aircraft. Like its Russian counterpart the MiG-31, this aircraft can reach 2,800 km/h (Mach 2.35) at an altitude of 3,000 meters. The Su-27 is still in production and is mainly used to ensure control of Russian airspace.

The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) has ratified all fighter aircraft speed records since 1903. On July 28, 1976, during the Cold War, (…)
