The vintage advert that resurfaces before Liverpool-Accrington – FA Cup – 3rd round – Liverpool-Accrington

Accrington Stanley? Who ?

This Saturday at the beginning of the afternoon, Accrington Stanley clubresident of the fourth English division, travels to Anfield for the third round of the FA Cup. A meeting a priori decided in advance, but which arouses the interest of the entire Kingdom. The reason? An advertisement for a milk brand from the 1980s that left its mark on British minds. We see a child, a Liverpool fan, drinking milk to imitate his idol Ian Rush. « Il (Ian Rush) Told me that if I didn’t drink a lot of milk, when I grew up I’d be just good enough to play for Accrington Stanley »slipped the kid.

The child from the ad is now… in prison

This advertisement, anchored not only in football culture but also in English pop culture, was at the origin of several remakes, as explained by Telegraph. Ian Rush himself even explained that « Since this ad came out it’s one of the most famous and it’s nice to be associated with it ».

This light and funny story also has its dark points. The child, whose face we do not see but who speaks to the main character, was sentenced to life in prison in February 2023 for beating a man to death. News that moved the country, and which revived the memory of this advertisement in recent years. Despite everything, this Saturday, everyone will know who the Accrington Stanley club is, having become nationally known for having been mocked in its anonymity.
