“My friends call me the chief pigeon”: the victims of DAZN testify – Ligue 1

Jérémie, 37 years old, supporter of AS Saint-Étienne

“We have just moved up to Ligue 1, I didn’t want to miss that. The price pissed me off, very clearly, it’s ten times too expensive. And then it was catastrophic: one day we were playing at 9 p.m., and there had been a lot of added time in the 7 p.m. match, so we had missed five or six minutes of play. But I had a bad experience on IPTV kept bugging. I barely saw the matches, I had goal alerts before seeing them on … I’m in an area where sometimes the network doesn’t work very well, I’m at a bit of a disadvantage compared to a big city. I can’t go to the stadium all the time either, and not see my team of the year so as not to subscribe to DAZN, I can’t see myself doing that. Impossible to get a reduction: the only thing I found to communicate with them is a robot chat. We’re a bit taken for idiots. If I had been a little more patient, I would have saved close to 100 euros over the year. I don’t have financial difficulties, so in that respect I’m lucky. But it’s certain that if I had trouble making ends meet, it would have quickly been seen. »

I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t go out much. So it’s a little luxury that I treat myself to.

Xavier, 40 years old, supporter of RC

“I want to see the matches in high quality, I don’t want to depend on an IPTV or ask someone else for codes. I also have Canal+, with the sports pack, really because I am a Lens supporter and I want to have free access to all the matches, and have a replay too. I am one of the only people around me to have DAZN. Even though the price was quite expensive, I didn’t want to be a protester. I subscribed directly, also to give strength, because we know that the clubs are dependent on TV rights. If we don’t pay 30 euros, French football will collapse, and a club like Lens won’t survive. I’m a little disappointed, because it’s the first faithful who are penalized. I didn’t bother with customer service, I gave up. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t go out much. So it’s a little luxury that I treat myself to. On the other hand, I will think about it next year, if it is still at the same price, I will calculate how many Lens matches I see live. I’m really disappointed with DAZN’s coverage of Ligue 1, it’s the worst I’ve seen. With Amazon, there was the Sunday evening show, you had access to films, and at least you had free deliveries…”

Julien, 35 years old, OL supporter

“I work in antipiracy. As a matter of principle, and as it’s sort of my job, I prefer to use the legal way. I systematically subscribe to the broadcaster. I’ve been watching all the OL matches since I was little, so I wanted to continue. The prices put me off a little, but not enough to stop me from paying. I was hesitating between taking 40 euros per month without commitment, or 30 with the twelve month commitment. Finally I said to myself, come on, let’s commit, we’ll pay a little less every month. And it was a mistake. I have it in my bones a bit. Their coverage, I find it quite cheap, it’s not worth the price, just in comparison with Prime. They make insides a bit cliché, we show a little inside the tunnel, but in fact, in terms of contribution, analysis, everything we could learn about the game of each team, tactics, it’s enough poor. I don’t even know at what price I would have stopped. I watch this with my wife, it’s the usual appointment, no matter the price really. »

Joëlle, 50 years old, supporter of RC

“My parents are 76 years old. My dad has Parkinson’s disease, he no longer leaves the house. My mother is a bit stuck at home with him. As a result, these are people who can no longer go to the stadium, who have always watched football on TV and who really enjoy watching football. We’re in Alsace, so it’s of course Racing, but generally speaking, they can watch any Ligue 1 match. It takes up their weekend. And for two years, they have been playing Mon Petit Prono with me, my sister, and their grandchildren. My mom first said no to DAZN, then she told me: « But we’re going to be so bored, we have to get a subscription. » They don’t care, even if it’s very expensive. I felt they were a bit hostage to this thing. Amazon was mega cheaper, and it also allowed access to lots of other things. My dad, he watched a lot of movies and stuff. Well, he still looks elsewhere, except that there’s no longer football on Amazon, anyway. »

Jean-Baptiste, 35 years old, supporter of Nîmes Olympique

“I took out my full price subscription a few days before the first promotion. My friends called me the pigeon in chief, my nicknames evolved as promotions progressed. Since the last one, they’ve been calling me the golden eagle. One of my friends even calls me the Bald Eagle. I see the bright side of things, it allowed me to learn about the existence of the eagle, I didn’t know this animal. I chose to take it well. I am a supporter of Nîmes Olympique; that is to say that on top of all that, I pay, and it’s not even to see my team. It’s terrible. »

Damien, 39 ans, supporter d’ SCO

“I like having my little Ligue 1 subscription, I watch two or three matches per weekend, it’s my little pleasure. And then I also play in Sorare, it’s pretty nice to be able to follow the matches. The price was a little expensive, but I said to myself, come on, we’ll still go with this, like every year. My feeling is that they are doing the union minimum. I wouldn’t say that I regret because I was able to follow the matches from the first day. That’s the point of paying full price. But it gives a bit of the impression that we are being taken for pigeons. Afterwards, that’s not the main reason, but there is also the idea of supporting our good old Ligue 1. And even the SCO indirectly, ultimately. »
