Piracy is a crucial subject for DAZN, BeInSports as well as the Professional Football League. The figures for illegal streaming during the Classic on October 27 between OM and PSG are dizzying.
Since the start of the season and the acquisition of Ligue 1 TV rights by DAZN, piracy has exploded to unimaginable proportions in France. A scourge that DAZN but also BeInSports and Canal+ wish to fight against, all victims of illegal streaming and pirate consumption of football. In recent weeks, ARCOM has increased its drastic actions and this has still made it possible to block 340 illegal domains. Initiatives necessary to improve the situation, but still insufficient to counter piracy as proven by a study by LFP Média, which reveals that 55% of viewers of the OM-PSG match on October 27 watched the match illicitly.
Piracy at a level never seen in France
“Since the start of the season, we have been facing a phenomenon of unprecedented scale… and I weigh my words. In such a context, DAZN, broadcaster of most of our matches, suffers from pirate competition while the interest in L1, its flagship product, is undeniable. Prices cannot in any way justify piracy which is theft and, I remind you, illegal” lamented Benjamin Morel, general director of LFP Media, whose departure is strongly anticipated but still not official. In addition to IPTV, encrypted messaging like Telegram is formidable for the League and its broadcasters, and the situation continues to deteriorate. Faced with this phenomenon, DAZN is trying everything possible by slashing its prices. The latest promotion from the main broadcaster of Ligue 1 fell this week, in the middle of Black Friday, with a flash offer of 15 euros per month to follow the French championship. Enough to bypass piracy? Response in the weeks and months to come.
