István Kovács will be on the whistle for the Champions League matchday five clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. The Romanian referee has already officiated two PSG matches last season, the rout at Newcastle (4-1) and the quarter-final return to Barcelona (1-4).
25th in the standings after four days of the Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain must bounce back on Tuesday evening (at 9 p.m.) against Bayern Munich (17th), at the Allianz Arena. With just one point taken in the last three games, Luis Enrique's men find themselves in a very bad situation and would be inspired to leave Germany with all three points.
If some uncertainties reign two days before the clash, notably with the Manuel Neuer case, the referee was revealed this Sunday. And it is István Kovács. The 40-year-old Romanian will be assisted by Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi. Florin Andrei will take the role of 4th referee, and video assistance will be provided by Pol van Boekel and Cătălin Popa.
UEFA has chosen an experienced man for Tuesday evening's match. Kovács has already refereed 24 Champions League matches since the 2018-2019 season, for a total of 114 yellow cards and three sending-offs (Transfermarkt statistics).
A good memory for Parisians
If the one who will be on the whistle at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday evening has already managed two European shocks this season, with Real Madrid-Borussia Dortmund (5-2) and Inter Milan-Arsenal (1-0), István Kovács has also refereed the third preliminary round between Lille and Fenerbahçe (2-1).
Concerning the main parties involved, the Romanian has already refereed each of them several times. For Munich, these are only good memories, with two 2-1 victories, against Lokomotiv Moscow in the group stage and against Lazio Rome in the round of 16, during the 2020-2021 season.
The Parisians knew Kovacs in a large victory (5-0) against Galatasaray in the group stage in 2019. Last season, Joao Neves' teammates were also refereed by the Romanian, first during the heavy defeat against Newcastle (4-1), then against FC Barcelona in the quarter-final return (4-1). At the whistle, the Romanian had notably sent off Ronald Araujo in the first period, then his coach Xavi.
