EdF: Deschamps stops the Blues, these few decisive days

The disappointing Euro and the criticism of the Blues' play made Didier Deschamps think about his future, as FFF president Philippe Diallo admitted.

The victory of the French team in Italy and in style allowed the Blues not only to finish at the top of their Nations League group, but also to end the year 2024 on a very positive note. It was not a refusal for Didier Deschamps who has not really sent a dream during these last 12 months, notably culminating in a Euro where the Blues are in the semi-finals, but playing a terrible game with absolutely no desire to score goals. This earned him a flood of criticism, and this reached the ears of the president of the FFFF.

A few days of suspense for Deschamps

Questioned on La Chaine L'Equipe, Philippe Diallo admitted that he had questioned Didier Deschamps about his future at the head of the team following the end of the Euro. The response was not immediate, which certainly generated uncertainty, but ultimately, the French coach took charge of the Blues once the mental load of the Euro had been digested.

« I told him was he worn out physically, mentally, after this Euro and after 10 years at the head of the France team. He asked me for a few days of reflection, of mental rest and he came back telling me that he was in great shape, ready to go back and rebuild the team that will take us to the 2026 World Cup. It was normal after a great competition, and a lot of criticism on the game. All this, obviously we see it and that's why I asked him if he felt able to return to service to take this team to the place where it should be, that is to say at summit », Delivered the leader of the French football federation, for whom the continuity of Didier Deschamps with the Blues was still called into question for a handful of days.
