The process is known even if the string remains as thick as ever. Since the arrival of Qatar in Paris in 2011 and the signature transfer of Javier Pastore for 42 million euros paid to Palermo, many European clubs have used the financial strength of PSG for internal or external purposes. It happened once again this Monday evening in Spain with the declarations of Enric Masip, advisor to Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona.
Like many lies, they are based on a real fact that is twisted to arrive at an untruth. In the show The ChiringuitoEnric Masip thus explained that Lamine Yamal was currently the most decisive player in the world recalling that “the president has already said that he had received an offer of 250 million euros which he rejected and that he never considered.” When asked where the offer came from, Masip replied: “It came from France”, allowing the show's presenter to add that Yamal would have made an excellent replacement for Kylian Mbappé, who left for Real Madrid this summer.
The basis of veracity refers to PSG's interest in the European champion with Spain. The two Parisian Luis, Enrique and Campos, respectively coach and sports advisor, have been in love with the right winger for a long time. On April 23, we mentioned this interest in an article entitled “Mercato: PSG dreams of Lamine Yamal, the FC Barcelona prodigy”. But no offer reached the desk of the Catalan leaders. The project remained at the stage of a dream or fantasy. In any case, the nugget had no intention of moving during the last transfer market. It is on this basis that Barça now positions itself to send false messages to several people or institutions.
By displaying to the world an alleged offer of 250 million – the player's rating is rather around 150 million – Barça inflates its figures to attract the good graces of financial fair play while the club's accounts remain highly monitored and in deficit during the last known financial year, at the end of the 2023-2024 season. By overvaluing one of its players in the media and including PSG in the affair, the club is also seeking to artificially increase the price of other members of its squad who will soon be tracked. A seamless strategy as the winter transfer window opens its doors soon – on January 2, 2025 in Spain.
The only other side of the coin: by drawing this offer from Paris which never existed, Barça exposes itself to the greed of the player and those around him. Because if Paris is able to put in 250 million euros, it is then necessary to quickly secure the contract of the offensive star, therefore extend it and increase it. Enric Masip's little outing could ultimately cost FC Barcelona dearly, literally.
