Montemurro: “The first goal took the pressure off us”

Joe Montemurro, @UEFA Women’s OL Coach

Overall satisfied with the big victory brought back from Italy, Joe Montemurro confided that OL's opener played a key role in this success against Roma (0-3).

OL women are continuing their merry way in the Champions League. On Wednesday, they beat two-time reigning Italian champions AS Roma 3-0 away. After three days, Joe's group Montemurro has nine points, for eight goals scored and none conceded. A first half of the group stage which has been perfectly negotiated so far.

Even against a good opponent, who had beaten Wolfsburg a little earlier in the competition, the Fenottes absolutely did not tremble in the Italian capital. “I think the opening score was key. We had several opportunities before and we must succeed in making them come true. It's difficult to come and play here, and so it took some pressure off us, admitted the Australian coach. Not conceding a goal is important. We not only focus on the defensive aspect, but also on our ability to recover the ball.

The former coach of Juventus Turin was generally satisfied with the performance of his troops. “My job is to lead the squad so that they have a good collective performance and that we win the match, which we did this time. (Wednesday) evening. What's important for me is that all the players contribute because it's a team and that's what we want to see.”he insisted.

Despite this perfect record for the moment, Olympique Lyonnais cannot relax. He must secure first place in the group, and this will require another solid performance to be delivered on Wednesday November 20 against these same Romaines. “We are still missing points to mathematically qualify for the quarter-finals, Montemurro recalled. We will therefore focus on the next big meeting next week, which we are looking forward to. Roma will come with the intention of bringing something back from , it will be a difficult match. We must continue like this.”

Before concluding with a little word about the heroine of the evening. With his double, including a second extraordinary achievement from midfield, Melchie Dumornay more than contributed to this excellent result. “Melchie is a player I really enjoy working with, he said. She keeps growing. Apart from her goals, she brings us so much.” It is true that for a repositioned attacking midfielder, her statistics are quite eloquent. The Haitian has a total of seven goals in nine appearances. She is quite simply the club's top scorer at this stage of the year.
