the president of Arcom tackles DAZN, its “exorbitant” prices would encourage piracy

Roch-Olivier Maistre, president of the audiovisual regulator, takes no gloves off with DAZN and judges it partly responsible for the scale of illegal streaming of Ligue 1 matches.

Why pay so much if it’s free elsewhere? Many football fans choose to follow Ligue 1 via illicit channels, especially since the rights to the championship have landed in the hands of DAZN. If Arcom tries to react by blocking numerous pirate sites, for its president, the price is a real vector of this increase in piracy.

He cites the example of the music industry, which offers a subscription of around ten euros per month to listen to tens of millions of titles, which has greatly reduced music piracy. But the arrival of DAZN would have had the opposite effect. “When we have exorbitant prices, we are sure to fuel piracy» says Roch-Olivier Maistre, who spoke before the Senate.

We can, however, note that since the launch of its offer in , DAZN seems to be finding its feet and putting water in its wine. After launching several promotions and offering a discovery week, the platform is preparing to boost its subscription formula to 29.99 euros per month. This offer will allow you to connect two devices simultaneously with the possibility of sharing the subscription. Indeed, with this option, subscribers will be able to split the costs, reducing the monthly cost to 15 euros per user.
