No, it’s not over between Messi and Barça

Three years after his departure to Saint-Germain, Lionel Messi remained linked to FC Barcelona on a financial level. During the health crisis, the attacking midfielder and two other executives agreed to defer salaries over five years. Amounts that the Catalan club will finish paying next year.

FC Barcelona is finally getting back on track. While his team occupies the lead in La Liga thanks to an excellent start to the season, the club led by Joan Laporta is gradually returning to balance in terms of financial fair play in Spain. And in the meantime, Barça finishes paying its debts that emerged during the health crisis. The Spanish giant, like many other teams in Europe at that time, had asked certain players to increase their salaries to compensate for losses.

Barça soon relieved

Midfielder Frenkie de Jong, for example, had smoothed out his contract over additional years, agreeing to receive the largest portion of the last part of the lease. Which explains why the Dutch international dominates the salary scale today. As for Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi, Barça had arranged to defer payment of part of their income. The Catalan press recalls that this agreement dates from 2020. And four years later, FC Barcelona still has not finished repaying its debts.

In fact, the current leader of the Spanish championship, according to the schedule established with the three Inter Miami players, has only planned to pay the last payment in 2025. Barça will therefore be free of this charge in a few months. Note that this deal does not harm the Blaugrana with regard to financial fair play in La Liga. The full salaries owed to the three players mentioned have been included in the accounts for the 2020-2021 financial year.
