“There is reason to be very optimistic”, Riolo sees OM playing for the title

Daniel Riolo, columnist for After Foot, is excited about the chances of seeing OM play for the title this season after the completely crazy success achieved in (2-3) on Sunday.

He had an “extraordinary” match. Daniel Riolo, columnist for After Foot, followed ’s victory in Lyon (2-3) with great enthusiasm after a completely crazy scenario on Sunday. Reduced to ten after five minutes of play, Marseille snatched victory in the last second of added time on a strike from Jonathan Rowe. “I didn’t think at 11pm I would say that I had more fun watching Lyon-Marseille than watching City-Arsenal, Ligue 1 gave me a completely crazy evening,” he smiles. While he condemns Lyon’s “unbearable” performance, he is excited about Marseille’s upcoming season, one of the title favourites, according to him.

“OM fills the mailbox every week and says: ‘we will be there'”

“When you look at the squads, Monaco appeals to me a lot and I think they have a squad to stay in the top 3 until the end,” he believes. “But OM sent another message tonight. OM fills the mailbox every week and says: ‘we’ll be there’. Rabiot will join this team and even if Wahi is on the inside, there will be guys to play up front. If even the ‘tricards’ regain confidence like Ulisses Garcia, Pol Lirola…”

“There’s also Rongier, who I’ll never change my mind about, he’s a 100% reliable guy, he’s in the game in the madness at the end of the match, look at what he did,” he continued. “Hojbjerg is the boss. The midfield that OM has built this year and given the reservations we’re going to have about PSG – and everyone is waiting for October 27 to see the confrontation between the two teams – I hope we have three teams playing for the title. You always have to stay measured, at OM, things get carried away very quickly. From what I see, there’s reason to be very optimistic.”

Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi has not yet publicly embraced this ambition. On Sunday evening, he played the humble game by directing the spotlight towards PSG and Monaco. “I’m not talking about the title, that wouldn’t be serious,” he said. “We’ve only just started our journey. PSG and Monaco are ahead of us. But we’re building a team with strong players with the president and Medhi Benatia. We’re looking to achieve perfection. I don’t know where that will take us. We play every match to win them, but football is sometimes strange.”
