Seizing fifth in the Premier League last season, Tottenham are now far from such considerations. Beaten 3-2 this Sunday by Everton, the North London club suffered its twelfth defeat of the season in the Premier League. Fifteenth, Tottenham is certainly eight points ahead of Ipswich Town, first relegated, but has already said goodbye or almost to the European places. Bournemouth, which is seventh, is thirteen points behind Tottenham. A critical situation for Spurs whose main hope now lies in the cups with a League Cup semi-final (1-0 first leg victory against Liverpool), a fourth round of the FA Cup against Aston Villa and the Europa League where the club is currently ninth, which means play-offs in a round of 16.

Some prospects of saving the season exist but for the Premier League it is becoming difficult with a fifth defeat (and a draw) in six matches. We have to go back to the big 5-0 victory against Southampton on December 15 to find any trace of a victory for Spurs in the Premier League. Although Tottenham has the second attack in the championship behind Liverpool (45 goals scored), its defense is a real problem (35 goals conceded, 15th best defense in the Premier League). With Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray (midfielder) who make up an experimental hinge, Tottenham suffers a terrible massacre in its team. Currently, Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Ben Davies, Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner, Wilson Odobert and Dominic Solanke are on the flank. That's the equivalent of an entire team.
Ange Postecoglou threatened
A real problem which means that despite his disappointing results, Ange Postecoglou retains support. Former England international, Dean Ashton was keen to defend him. The consultant of Sky Sports believes that injuries have a major role in Spurs' bad luck and that the man for the job is still Ange Postecoglou: “If you're a Tottenham fan and you want Postecoglou to leave, then I think you're crazy.» On the other hand Jamie O'Hara was more severe and demanded the departure of the Tottenham coach: “This is simply ridiculous. I know they have injuries, but this can't continue. We are in a fight for relegation. It's embarrassing. I'll be surprised if Ange survives, no matter the injuries and no matter what we have in terms of Cup results, the Premier League is the bread and butter, it's not enough.» Vice-captain of Tottenham, James Maddison delivered an implacable observation and calls for sacred union: “we have 11 fit senior players, but the first half is unacceptable! We are going through a difficult time. We must accept that we have fallen short. We must stand united and fight, that is the only way to achieve this.»

Overall Premier League standings
Wanting to reverse the trend even if the English media believe that his position as coach is increasingly weakened, Ange Postecoglou wants to stay the course and thinks he can reverse the situation: “This is a difficult result. We struggled to really get into the game in the first half and that gave Everton some momentum. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb, but the players certainly tried to get back into the game, but we couldn't. We are obviously quite tense. We literally had 11 fit players to start the match. It's my fault for trying to restructure a little. We didn't have full control of our organization, especially at the start, and Everton took advantage of that and we paid the price. If you look at the situation we're in, it will eventually dissipate. I hope and believe that this will be the case. We will give ourselves the opportunity to achieve consistent performance and results. I certainly didn't lose the faith or the determination to turn things around and the players showed in the second half that they hadn't lost the faith either.» At the bottom of the abyss, Ange Postecglou and Tottenham will no longer really have the right to make mistakes from now on.
