Olympique Lyonnais are not rolling in gold, and the prospect of losing a big contract cannot please anyone within the club. This is the case with the naming contract for the OL stadium.
Jean-Michel Aulas was visionary in allowing Olympique Lyonnais to have its own stadium, even if this did not fit perfectly with the sporting results of the Rhone club. But, we see this season, thanks to the good results of Pierre Sage's team in Ligue 1 and the Europa League, the Groupama Stadium is very full, the demand having become very great again to come and watch OL matches .
However, if in the collective memory what had been called the Stade des Lumières or even the Parc OL is now known as the Groupama Stadium, the French mutual insurance company could no longer be naming partner of the club now in the hands of John Textor. As Sportune explains, the precious contract signed three years ago between Olympique Lyonnais and Groupama ends next July.
Groupama Stadium soon to be renamed?
For the moment, there is no indication that it will be extended, and especially if it will be extended at the price currently paid. Because to afford the name of the OL stadium, but also that of the training center, Groupama agreed to pay 6.9 million euros per season. And this is not insignificant, because as Thomas Filhol points out, the insurance company pays one of the largest amounts for a naming contract in Europe, confirming in passing, for those who doubted it, that Jean- Michel Aulas was a hell of a negotiator.
Indeed, with these 6.9ME per year paid to Olympique Lyonnais, Groupama signed a contract which enters the European Top 15 for the naming of a stadium, and which is obviously number 1 in France where this practice is still very little widespread. On the side of John Textor and Eagle Football, we will probably have to negotiate very hard to try to reach an agreement, even if it could well be that Groupama lowers the price of this partnership.
