During the Ligue 1 match between ASSE and Olympique de Marseille on December 8, Saint-Etienne supporters lit approximately 450 smoke bombs to celebrate Saint Barbara and the 25th anniversary of the Avant Garde. This impressive pyrotechnic show prompted the referee to interrupt the match at the end of the match due to the cloud of smoke invading the pitch. Accordingly, ASSE was summoned by the LFP disciplinary committee this Wednesday.
A firm sanction for the Kops
After examining the file, the commission decided to heavily sanction the offending supporters. The Kops North and South of Stade Geoffroy-Guichard will be closed for the next two home matches. This decision deprives the fervent supporters of the stands Charles Paret and Jean Snella of the matches against Reims and Nantes next January. A severe measure which follows the suspended suspension imposed on Kop Sud after the play-off match against Metz last season.
A tense context for the ASSE
This sanction occurs in a delicate context for the Greenswho remain on a heavy 2-0 defeat at home against OM during this famous meeting. A setback which precipitated the dismissal of Olivier Dall'Oglio, coach at the time.
A major challenge for management
Beyond the sporting aspect, this closure of the Kops represents a new headache for the Saint-Etienne management. Already faced with a tense economic situation, the club will have to cope without the unconditional support of its main groups of supporters during the next receptions.
