The Professional Football League (LFP) has finally decided for its Champions Trophy which it organizes every year. After the cancellation of the meeting initially planned for Beijing in the summer, it will take place in Qatar for this 2024-2025 season.
Scheduled for January 5, 2025, this edition will pit Paris Saint-Germain, French champion and winner of the reigning French Cup, against AS Monaco, runner-up in Ligue 1, at the 974 stadium in Doha. The choice of location is obviously not trivial. Financially, the operation would be estimated at three million euros for Visit Qatar, the new title partner of the event. An investment that consolidates the country's influence in the French football ecosystem.
Towards a change of formula after this offbeat Champions Trophy?
Stadium 974, an infrastructure inaugurated for the 2022 World Cup, will serve as the setting for this meeting. Located in Doha, it offers a capacity of 45,000 seats, and embodies Qatar's ambition to remain a key player in world football.
The organization of this Champions Trophy comes in a context where the LFP is seeking to reshape its product. In 2025, the format could evolve towards a “final four”, similar to that adopted in Spain and Italy, with a planned relocation to Africa. The Democratic Republic of Congo is mentioned as a potential host.
