He then canceled the goal for a foul committed at the start of the action, granting a free kick to the Phocaeans which Hojbjerg converted. Very frustrated, the general director of the RCL, Pierre Dréossi, said after the game: “We have had frustration for a while. It repeats itself a little too much. I have the impression that after each contentious action, we call the VAR. We can't take points from us and say nothing. Many fouls were not called. The interpretations are often against RC Lens. We’re starting to get fed up.”
The fault on Nadir confirmed by the national arbitration department
Except that the national arbitration commission, which works at the start of each week on the facts of the game that occurred the previous weekend in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, confirmed Mr. Wattellier's decision: “The responsibility of the Lensois player, committed deliberately and recklessly at the start of an offensive phase ending with a goal scored, prevents the Marseille player from playing the ball normally. It thus constitutes a fault within the meaning of the Laws of the game. In accordance with the protocol for implementing video assistance to refereeing, the referee must here “view the action until the start of the offensive phase leading to the goal and (…) the recovery of the ball at the origin of the start of this phase of play”. The video referee therefore alerted the referee before the game resumed and invited him to watch at the side of the field. The goal was therefore logically refused and the game was correctly restarted with a direct free kick punishing the initial fault. End of the controversy?
