Fabio Coentrão played his last official match in May 2021 with Portuguese club Rio Ave. Since then, he has withdrawn from the media and we have no longer heard from the former Real Madrid player, among others.

More than two years later, he reappeared on social networks to announce that he had invested in the world of fishing. The player, who has won practically everything in professional football, gave an interview to Tribuna Expresso to show a little-known personal side.

Coming from a family of fishermen, Coentrão was introduced to this world at a young age and invested in fishing because he “felt he had to be there. “I wanted people to forget about Fabio for a while time. It's not that I don't like football, but I tried to dissociate myself from this world,” he told Tribuna Expresso.

Today the Portuguese owns four boats and, although his job is not fishing, he is the one who organizes and maintains everything so that those who go to sea do not have problems. Although it is not always easy, because many fishermen “ended up staying there”.

Some might think it is risky to leave the luxury life of football and enter a world as unknown as fishing. But for Coentrão, it wasn't difficult, because “I already knew everything about the sea, because before being a footballer, I was already involved in this environment.” Fishing is a family activity to which his father devoted his whole life and today the former Portuguese defender wants to “follow in his footsteps”.

After winning titles as important as the Champions League, the Club World Cup, the Spanish League, the European Super Cup and the Copa del Rey, the Portuguese has become the protagonist of the dock. All the fishermen want to greet him. “It’s not that he doesn’t like football, it’s just that it’s not the life I want, I like the life of the sea,” he says.
