ASSE: after the death of Mekhloufi, who remains of the first green heroes?

Died on November 8, Rachid Mekhloufi was the star of the first great ASSE team, the one which won four titles in a row from 1967 to 1970. Here is what became of his teammates in the 1966-67 season, the one which launched the legend of the Saint-Etienne club.

Pierre Bernard : the goalkeeper died on May 28, 2014, at the age of 82. A resident of Stéphane from 1963 to 1967, he won two championship titles with the Greens, for his first and last season.

Georges Polny: the defender is one of six Stéphanois from this era still alive. Trained at ASSE, he played there until 1972, before moving to Monaco, , and Stade Poitevin. One of the finest records in French football (5 league titles, 3 Coupes de ).

Bernard Bosquier: he too is still alive. He turned 74 on June 19. In 1966-67, he had his first season at ASSE, after his transfer from Sochaux. He stayed five years in Forez before his very controversial departure to OM. As long as he played, he was champion…

Nello Sbaiz: he left us almost two years ago, on November 28, 2022, at the age of 81. Born in Italy, this central defender spent his entire career in France. He was trained at ASSE, where he stayed until 1967. He then left for , where he died.

Roland Mitoraj: at 84, the former defender is still alive. He spent twelve years at Saint-Etienne (1958-70) before signing up with a nascent PSG, bouncing back to the Girondins de and ending his career at Aix-en-Provence.

Aimé Jacquet: the hero of the 98 World Cup is not in the best shape but he is still with us, at the age of 82. In 1966-67, he was a pillar of ASSE, which he left in 1973 to make the short journey to .

Jean-Michel Larqué: the future captain of the Greens began his career in 1966-67 but he was already proving himself essential. He was an immense player, a highly respected commentator and an inspired editor. Unfortunately, only his leadership career was not up to par, which was detrimental to ASSE in the early 1990s. He is now 77 years old.

Robert Herbin: the legendary Sphinx passed away on April 27, 2020 at the age of 81. Etrat today bears his name, a statue was also to see the light of day. Just reward for a man who won almost all the ASSE titles, as a player and then a coach.

Hervé Revelli: the future top scorer in the history of ASSE began his fruitful career in 1966-67. Launched a year earlier among the pros, he became a starter that season and scored 31 goals in 34 matches. He is now 78 years old.

André Fefeu: the former right winger passed away a year ago, on July 9, 2023, at the age of 84. He only stayed three years at Saint-Etienne, winning as many French championship titles, a Coupe de France and two Champions Challenges. Or his entire track record.

Georges Beretta : the summer of 2023 was very complicated for ASSE alumni since the former winger died on July 4 at the age of 77. Favorite of the supporters, Bereta is one of the greatest legends of the Greens, a pure Stéphanois viscerally attached to his club.
