Derby: Travel ban, the prefecture justifies itself

ASSE travels to Groupama Stadium this Sunday, November 10. A derby always eagerly awaited. For the occasion, Greens supporters hoped to be able to travel. In vain. The decree from the Rhône prefecture came as expected.

A Derby without Green

It's no surprise to anyone, ASSE supporters will not be welcome at Groupama this Sunday. A prefectural decree came to justify and formalize this now official travel ban:

“Considering that during the 2023-2024 season of the Ligue 1 championship, the movements of club supporters were the source of disturbances to public order due to the violent behavior of some of them ;

Considering that there is a very strong and lasting antagonism between supporters of the OL and ASSE clubs; […]

Considering that on the night of Thursday March 25 to Friday March 26, 2021of the abuses were committed and discovered in the Geoffroy Guichard stadium of ASSE and in the immediate vicinity of it; that current investigations revealed that individuals had managed to enter the Saint-Etienne enclosure to puncture the 12 tires of the machines necessary for several matches on the main field; that these individuals then affixed numerous stickers reporting the inscription “ARMÉE – RUE GRENETTE – UNITED” – assault marking the start of a “fight” pitting ultra-Stéphanois and Lyon supporters against each other, on February 29, 2020 in the the Lyon area the day before an OL-ASSE derby;

Considering that in the night of March 29 to 30, 2023, the southwest corner of the Geoffroy Guichard stadium was the subject of a series of damage targeting the letters forming the acronym “ASSE” and constituting “F**K ASSE”, as well as that the tags “SHIT SHIT SHIT” spray; that these registrations are part of a constant ancestral rivalry between the two clubs, theSaint-Étienne Sports Association and Olympique Lyonnais.

Considering that on April 8, 2023, during the day of the season, where ASSE hosted Foot 38 (GF 38), before the start of the match, while an individual wearing an OL scarf went entering Geoffroy Guichard's sports arena, the latter was spotted by an ASSE supporter who came up to him from behind and dealt him a violent punch, making him lose consciousness;

Considering that on September 11, 2023,The damage by tags was committed near the “Magic Fans” premises on a fresco painted by this group with a Celtic cross and the inscriptions “VSL” (Village Sud Lyon 1950) ; that on the night of Monday to Wednesday October 4, 2023, damage by tags was committed on the fresco of the Kop stand at the Geoffroy Guichard stadium, on the club store with the following words: “f**k ASSE 69”, “ALLEZ LOV 69”, “ASAB”, “MORTS aux VERTS”;

Considering that violence was recently carried out by OL supporters and in particular on November 21, 2021 during the OL-OM matchto which ultra supporters (notably throwing objects from Lyon supporters during the match on May 27); that this episode follows the entire wave occupied by the Lyon ultras; that it is important to remember that the universal right of access to the ticket office on June 21 of this year constitutes a violation of the rights of supportability with regard to intolerable behavior;

Considering that on December 17, 2021, nearly 200 ultras from Lyon were traveling to by train, on the occasion of the Paris Football Club OL, arrested, then released 7 km from the stadium after police intervention; that their behavior, which had proven to be threatening and violent (use of smoke bombs and throwing objects into the stands) towards opposing supporters, led to the match being canceled by the LFP; that several supporters who entered the field then attempted to physically attack PFC players;

Considering that, in a competitive sporting context, any provocation materialized by isolated arrivals of Saint-Etienne supporters near the stadium risks generating violent reactions from local supporters ;

Considering that under these conditions, the presence in the city center of Lyon, around and within the Groupama Stadium on Sunday November 10, 2024 of people who claim to be ASSE supporters or behave as such, is likely to cause serious incidents for the safety of people and property;

Considering that the match of November 10, 2024 was classified S3, by the National Directorate for the Fight against Hooliganism (DNLH), the meeting being considered very high risk”
