Ivory Coast/October 12: One date, two symbols

The date of October 12 will now be marked in Ivory Coast with a double symbol: the deaths of Douk Saga and the more recent death of Valery d’Espoir 2000.

Two musical genres, two stars. It was in Ouagadougou on Thursday October 12, 2006 that Stéphane Amidou Doukouré known as Douk Saga died, the creator of sagacity, leader of the Parisian ”buccaneers”. He died after a long illness.

And this October 12, 2024, at a time when in Ivory Coast, history remembers his early disappearance, another figure of Zouglou music leaves us. Tougbo Téa Valery of Espoir 2000 also left on October 12 after a long illness for which he had moved to .

Coupé-décalé and zouglou, the country’s two flagship musical genres, like a cruel sign of destiny, responded to the call of pain which, since yesterday (editor’s note October 12) has gripped the two artistic families.

Just like Douk Saga who climbed forever to the summit of the Himalayas, Valery leaves Pat Sacko, his faithful partner who will have the heavy legacy of perpetuating the hope of this suave and teasing zouglou who has been delighting music lovers for almost 30 years .
