Football-Qualifying CAN 2025/GL-J6/Senegal-Malawi (4-0): the Lions enjoy the first of Pape Thiaw on their bench, with Nicolas Jackson’s first goal in the selection and join Burkina in the lead

XALIMANEWS-This Friday at the Abdoulaye Wade stadium in Diamniadio, the Senegal Lions defeated the Malawi Flames (4-0). A great success, which took a long time to emerge, but which allows Senegal to come back to the level of Burkina Faso, who are ahead of them on goal average.

In their lair at the Abdoulaye Wade stadium, for their first outing in 9 years without their former coach Aliou Cissé, the Lions got into the game well. After 7 minutes of play, Senegal obtained 3 corners. And after the first quarter of an hour, it’s the first turning point of the match. Malawian Brighton Munthali received a red card after a last defender’s foul on Sadio Mané launched by Jackson (16th). Dominators, Senegal failed to score a single goal, despite a free and quite enterprising Ilman Ndiaye. We had to wait until the 34th minute to hear the first bronca of the match. The former Sheffield and player gets rid of two opponents in the area to serve Pape Gueye, who with a splendid left shot under the top corner, opens the scoring for the Lions (35th, 1-0). Senegal will be satisfied with the minimum service after a first period, which they outrageously dominated obtaining 10 corners against zero.

Change made by Malawi at the start of the first period. As at the start of the match, the Lions set up their bases in the Malawian camp. Lamine Camara tries his hand at a long shot, off target (48th). In the process, Jackson launched into the opposing area, missed his shot (49th). Pape Thiaw, the Senegalese coach, will make his first change, with the exit of Formose Mendy, replaced by Habib Diarra (52nd). In the next minute, Ilman Ndiaye on a serve from Ismaila Sarr enters the area but his shot is off target (52nd). In this first quarter of an hour, the Flames made two changes, while the Lions made three changes, including the exits of Ilman Ndiaye and Lamine Camara, replaced by Gana Gueye and Boulaye Dia (64th). The lions, quite dominant with Pape Gueye shining in midfield, still cannot make the break against an opponent who is quite technical and numerically inferior. But on a ball scratched by Ismaila Sarr who misses Sadio, the Al Nassr player will unleash a left shot which hits the mark (68th, 2-0). Senegal takes the break. A minute later, Boulaye Dia, the new entrant, will deal the blow to the Flames by scoring the 3rd goal (71st, 3-0). In three minutes, the Lions scored two goals. But the best is yet to come. Chelsea player Nicolas Jackson launched by Gana Gueye, will enter the area, fix two opponents before scoring the fourth goal with a right shot (76th, 4-0). This is Nicolas Jackson’s first goal with the Lions. The scorer and Pape Gueye will come out to be replaced by Habib Diallo and Nampalys Mendy. Lions star Sadio Mané could have increased the score if he had been clinical enough on two opportunities, in the 82nd and 83rd minutes. And despite 3 minutes of added time and scoring opportunities for Senegal, the score will not change.

With this success, large and deserved, the Lions join Burkina in first place in Group L, with the same number of points and the same goal average (7 pts +5). In 4 days (Tuesday October 15), the Lions will visit the Flames in Lilongwe.
